What does a wide orb indicate that a narrow one wouldn't (aspects)?

I'm not 100% sure i know exactly what you're asking, but if i'm understanding you correctly, the wider the orb is between 2 objects in aspect, the less powerful the aspect, and therefore a less pronounced effect on the individual.
