Why does my pus smell bad?

I know this is gross, but I've noticed today when I popped a zit on my face that the pus smelled really bad. Kinda like snot. (again sorry for sounding nasty) I've never smelled it before but I picked up the stench on my fingers. Why does it smell this way? Is it normal? I'm 14 btw if that helps any
